The Distaff of Silence: The Image of Rachel the Matriarch in Modern Hebrew Poetry

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The matriarch, Rachel, strikes us as a tragic figure -- forced to share her husband with her sister, and then barren for years only to die prematurely in child-birth. Modern Israeli poets, however, transform the image of the matriarch, offering radical readings of the biblical text that displace traditional understandings.
