Today I am a Woman: stories of Bat Mitzvah Around the World

Based on a recently published book, this session highlights personal stories from six continents, accounts of the joys and problems related to bat mitzvah in 78 countries. Accompanied by family photographs and descriptions of the communities they come from, the stories remind us of the worldwide dispersion of the Jewish people, their diversity in a multitude of cultures, and womens varied opportunities.


Shulamit Reinharz

Shulamit Reinharz is the Jacob Potofsky Professor of Sociology, the Director of the Women\'s Studies Research Center and of the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute, all at Brandeis University. She is the author of 12 books, including The JGirl\'s Guide (with Feldman and Adelman), American Jewish Women and the Zionist Enterprise (with Mark Raider, and Jewish Intermarriage around the World (with Sergio DelaPergola).

Barbara Vinick

Barbara Vinick is a sociologist affiliated with the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute at Brandeis University, where she published Esthers Legacy: Celebrating Purim Around the World. Shulamit Reinharz is the Jacob S. Potofsky Professor of Sociology at Brandeis University, and the founder and Director of the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute. Her books include Jewish Intermarriage around the World, and The JGirls\' Guide.
